A six-foot sculpture entitled ‘Structural Sorcerer — a Sorcerer’s Apprentice Mickey Sculpture’ is currently occupying Royal College of Art, and it is totally free to visit. The sculpture, displayed at the Battersea college, is essentially a reimagination version of the Sorcerer’s Apprentice Mickey Mouse from Fantasia (1940).

The multi-coloured masterpiece, which will sit in situ for the rest of summer, was created by Disney and fashion designer Virgil Abloh’s firm, ALASKA ALASKA, as part of the Disney’s Create 100 programme. Disney Create 100 is a newly launched global celebration that aims to inspire and champion the next generation of talent. All proceeds from the programme will be donated to Make-A-Wish ®.

A number of celebrities and visionaries are partaking in the Create 100 programme, including Beyonce, Christian Louboutin, and Tommy Hilfiger. They have donated artworks, items, and experiences that represent their personal connection to stories and characters across Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and 20th Century.

“Disney’s timeless stories and characters have made an indelible mark on pop culture around the globe,” said Disney’s Consumer Products, Games and Publishing President Tasia Filippatos. “We couldn’t think of a better way to honour 100 years of Disney storytelling than by collaborating with this outstanding collective of visionaries in support of Make-A-Wish.”

Disney Create 100 falls within the over-arching Disney 100 celebrations, taking place to honour the iconic brand’s centenary. Alongside this installation, there are many other activations taking place, including an epic exhibition opening in October, aptly named Disney 100: The Exhibition. Here, there will be 10 themed galleries, featuring an array of props, original costumes, moving stories, and much more from the adored classics to contemporary favourites.

As well as the Disney Create 100 programme, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice Mickey Mouse sculpture in Battersea also pays homage to the legacy of fashion designer Virgil Abloh. This sculpture takes inspiration from the Mickey Mouse illustration he created in 2018 in celebration of Mickey Mouse’s 90th birthday. Abloh had a close relationship with the Royal College of Art, where this current sculpture is being displayed, and the college has recently announced a scholarship to support talented, but financially restricted, Black British students.

Additional artworks, items, and experiences will be revealed as part of Disney Create 100 over the summer, all planned to be auctioned off in aid of Make-A-Wish. Find out more here.
